The Homer-Center school board has taken the pledge to not raise taxes above the state-mandated limits in the 2017-2018 budget.
The Act 1 state-mandated tax index for the district would be 3.6%, which would roughly equate to a half-mil increase for district taxpayers. Board president Vicki Smith is confident that any tax increases from the district would not hit that upper limit.
In other business, the board rejected by a five-four vote a trip for seniors to attend a three-day class trip to Virginia Beach and Busch Gardens at no cost to the district. Some of the reasons given for the rejection included the perceived lack of educational value.
The board also approved by a five-four vote to adopt changes to board policy concerning pupils and class rank. The changes restore the accolades of valedictorian and salutatorian to the graduation exercises but it does not restore the class rank system.
