The state Public Utility Commission yesterday approved a rate increase for Penelec customers, but it was a much smaller increase than the company requested. The PUC affirmed joint settlements for the four Pennsylvania subsidiaries of FirstEnergy Corporation: Penelec, Met-Ed, Penn Power, and West Penn Power.
Penelec’s residential customers will see a rate increase of 12.08 percent, amounting to $17.63 per month for the average household using 1,000 kilowatt hours each month. The average bill will rise from $145.86 to $163.49. Penelec had requested an increase of 17.1 percent.
The new rate is expected to generate $94.6 million in annual revenues for Penelec. It will take effect no later than January 27th.
