We’ve heard reports of influenza becoming widespread in Pennsylvania, and IUP has taken precautions to make sure that students and faculty are preventing its spread across campus.
The Pennsylvania Department of health says that Indiana County has 378 lab-confirmed cases of influenza, while across the state, 26,675 flu cases have been confirmed. This of course doesn’t take into account the cases of flu that are unconfirmed when people don’t go to the doctor to get flu treated or a doctor treats the flu without laboratory confirmation. On IUP’s Campus, 17 of 31 students tested were positive for influenza, with 12 of them coming in the last week.
Melissa Dick of IUP’s health services said the university has taken steps by offering free flu shots, with several hundred of those vaccines provided to IUP by the PA Department of Health. Dick said that they offered the vaccines to students before making the flu shots available to faculty, staffers and the community at large.
IUP’s Health Services said that no appointment is necessary for community members to receive the flu shot. You can contact them at 724-357-2550 for more information.
