Earlier this week, we reported on how IUP is handling influenza as the flu virus is “widespread” across the state. The numbers of flu cases in the county and across the state continue to increase.
As of today, the number of laboratory-confirmed flu cases in Indiana County has increased sharply to 443 cases. Across the state, there are now 33,271 lab-confirmed flu cases. A few weeks ago, influenza was declared “widespread” across Pennsylvania by the PA Department of Health.
At Indiana Regional Medical Center’s UrgiCare, they have received many of those Influenza cases reported in Indiana County and Pat Shannon of IRMC UrgiCare said that as of late, they have seen a lot of pediatric flu cases that have lead to some related complications.
Shannon also said that while it is late in the season to get a flu shot, it’s a situation of “better late than never”. Flu vaccines can be received via doctor’s office or many pharmacies in Indiana County.
We should mention that the number of confirmed cases does not include any unconfirmed cases, such as when someone is treated for the flu without laboratory confirmation, and those who don’t go to the doctor and treat the flu on their own.
