The IUP women’s basketball team nearly lost a 14-point lead in the second half but held on for a 84-79 win over California to win the PSAC championship Sunday at Shippensburg University.
Carolyn Appleby scored 30 points to lead the Crimson Hawks to victory and won the tournament MVP award. Megan Smith and Brittany Robinson scored 17 points each for IUP (23-6).
Seairra Barrett led all scorers with 31 points for California.
IUP shot 9 of 14 from 3-point territory, compared to 2 of 10 for California. The Crimson Hawks also hit 15 of 17 from the foul line.
IUP won its fifth PSAC championship. The program won in 1988, 2007, 2008 and 2009 as well.
It was the second consecutive season and the fifth time overall that the Crimson Hawks and Vulcans have met in the PSAC championship game.
