JCPenney this month announced that it will close 130 to 140 stores in the next few months, with the list to be announced next month. But Morningstar Credit Ratings has released a list of 39 stores which it calls “most at risk of closing”, and it includes the Indiana Mall store.
BusinessInsider.com cites the Morningstar report, which says the imperiled stores are being considered for closure based on sales per square foot compared to the JCPenney average or on the amount of money the company would have to invest to make the stores more profitable. Six stores in Pennsylvania are on the list, with the Indiana Mall store being the only one in the western half of the state.
The JCPenney store is one of four anchor stores that have been in business at the Indiana Mall since it opened in 1979. The other three are Sears, Kmart, and the Bon Ton.
