Indiana County’s unemployment rate went down significantly in the month of January.
According to the State Department of Labor and Industry, Indiana County’s Unemployment rate fell by six-tenths of a percent to 6.3% in January. Over a year’s time, the unemployment rate fell by one-tenth of a percent.
Indiana County is in a tie for 55th among the state’s 67 counties for the lowest unemployment rate. Comparing Indiana County to our neighbors, Westmoreland County was the lowest with 5.0%, Jefferson county had a 5.7% unemployment rate, Clearfield County had a 6.0% rate, Cambria had a 6.1% rate, and Armstrong county had the highest among adjoining counties with 6.6%.
The number of non-farm jobs in the area decreased by 1700 to 31,100 in January. The area that saw the largest drop was State Government due to IUP’s Winter Break. Over the last year, the number of jobs went down by 200.
