The Saltsburg Trojans boys’ basketball team was honored Saturday afternoon when the town held a parade and special presentation.
Saltsburg Mayor Elizabeth Rocco presented each player and coach with a special recognition and gave the team the key to the city. Rocco said the team and its accomplishments meant a great deal to the small town:
“We are a close-knit community. I’ve lived here since I was a child. Many of the people – these kids, their parents, also grew up here. And they’ve chosen to raise their families here. These kids have instilled that sense of school spirit that we haven’t had in a long time and they’ve done a good job. We’re proud of them, we’re very proud.”
Head coach Don Stitt lauded the community for its support during the season:
“Throughout the whole year this community has come together. I mean, throughout the year our crowds just kept getting bigger and bigger and the community is coming together. And what a great celebration this was by the mayor and the borough of Saltsburg to recognize our team with our accomplishments this year, and, this is just a great day.”
Senior Frank Plowman said the season brought the community together.
“Oh, this is great. What we did, it just brought everybody together. When I first came here, there wasn’t much involvement, not much community support, and by the end of – like every playoff game was a home game for us. We got so much support from everybody, it was great.”
The team enjoyed an incredible 2016-17 season, with a 26-2 record, a Heritage Conference championship and a District 6 Class A championship.
