Donald E. Huey, 81, of Gipsy, PA passed away at his home on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 with his loving wife and family nearby.
The son of Harry L. and Margaret “Maggie” L. (Bennett) Huey, he was born on June 4, 1937 in Hillsdale, PA.
Don was an active and faithful longtime member of the Hillsdale Wesleyan Church, where he had been serving as the church treasurer for a period of time.
Don and his wife, Millie E. (Nesbit) Huey wed on July 15, 1959 and shared over fifty-nine years of marriage.
Throughout his life, Don was known a hard worker. Over his working career, he had been employed with Dilner Transfer; Hillsdale Mining and with his son Don’s business, Don Huey Custom Building.
A man who never actually retired, he was still employed as part of the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. staff, where his friendly presence has greeted the community at the front door for the past seven years.
Don enjoyed the outdoors and going hunting. Ever since boyhood, one of the highlights of his year was journeying to his grandfather Elmer Huey’s log cabin to go hunting in the fall. Don thoroughly loved his trip to the hunting camp this past November with his son-in-law, Robert and his grandson, Colton. He delighted in spending time sitting by the fire and in sharing photos from the trip when he returned home.
Family was important to Don. He and Millie for years have hosted the Bennett reunion at their backyard pavilion.
Don is survived by his wife, Millie, of Gipsy, PA; his son, Donald A. Huey and wife, Angie of Indiana, PA and his daughter, Melissa C. Diaz and husband, Robert of Poland, OH and his grandchildren: Deanna (Huey) Miller and husband Steve and children of New Castle, PA; Jessica (Huey) Gallagher and husband Jon and children of Indiana, PA; Shane Huey and wife, Amanda and children of Jamestown, TN; Colton Diaz of Poland, OH and Abbie Huey of Indiana, PA.
Also surviving are his sister, Dolores (Huey) Robertson and husband, Paul of Indiana, PA and his brother, Elmer Huey and wife Doris of Northeast, PA.
He was preceded in death by his mother on June 8, 1981 and his father on August 14, 1991.
Family and friends will be received from 6-9:00 p.m. on Friday, February 22, 2019 at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd. in Hillsdale, PA, where a 1:00 p.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019. Rev. Paul Duncan and Rev. Steve Kunselman will officiate. Interment will be at the East Mahoning Cemetery in Purchase Line, PA.
It was Don’s request, that in lieu of flowers, family and friends would instead bring greeting cards and notes for his family to keep as remembrances to be saved and looked upon by them in the days to come. A basket will be present at the funeral home for the collection of these cards or you may mail cards to the Don Huey family at P. O. Box 10, Gipsy, PA 15741.
