The Department of Homeland Security has postponed the enforcement date for Pennsylvania’s REAL ID compliance by a year due to Covid-19.
When the declaration for all non-life sustaining businesses to close went out on March 16th, PennDOT closed all driver and photo license centers and paused issuing REAL ID licenses in Pennsylvania. Centers are set to reopen on April 3rd at the latest, but that could change as the coronavirus situation changes. PennDOT submitted a letter to the Department of Homeland Security, and they granted an extension to October 1st of 2021.
REAL ID is the federal law that affects driver’s licenses and state photo ID cards. Pennsylvanians have the option of upgrading their licenses to be REAL ID compliant that could be used to enter a secure federal building or board a commercial flight. PennDOT will continue to issue standard license and photo ID cards once PennDOT resumes normal operations.
