IUP has announced that distance learning for university students will extend into the summer months and May commencement has been postponed due to concerns over the coronavirus pandemic.
IUP’s faculty was notified this morning about the extension of the “no in-person” directive from PASSHE Chancellor Daniel Greenstein through the upcoming summer semester. All classes during that time will be delivered online, including internships and field experiences. Also, all conference activity hosted by IUP Conference Services through the end of May have been cancelled or re-scheduled, and IUP Camps and other face-to-face experiences will not be held.
As far as commencement goes, IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll announced in a separate letter to the IUP community that even though the ceremonies have been put off until later this year, students who are set to receive their degrees this semester will receive them as scheduled. Graduates will be recognized online, but there will not be an in-person or virtual event.
The university is working with families and students to plan out when graduation ceremonies will take place. The options on the table are a separate graduation ceremony in September or participation in full graduation ceremonies on December 11th and 12th. Another announcement on the plans for graduation will come after IUP receives responses from the students and families.
