IUP and the Indiana Regional Medical Center are teaming up in the fight against the coronavirus outbreak by providing testing facilities at the hospital that will produce results in the same day.
Dr. N. Bharathan, the chairman of the IUP Department of Biology, will work at IRMC to conduct Specialized COVID-19 Real Time PCR testing using equipment from his IUP lab. The equipment was moved earlier this week and testing will begin on Monday, April 20th. IRMC will purchase the needed materials and personal protective equipment for Dr. Bharathan, and he will be working closely with IRMC physicians to determine presumptive positive cases and negative tests that need to be reported to the Department of Health.
Bharathan talked about how fast the test can produce results.
Steve Wolfe, president of IRMC talked about the impact this testing would have at IRMC.
The tests will be for patients who are already hospitalized or have been screened and deemed appropriate.
