Online reaction continues to come in over a proposed ordinance for Indiana Borough that mandate the wearing of face masks to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and imposing fines for those who do not comply.
As we reported, the proposed ordinance would require borough residents and those doing business or visiting people in the borough to wear a face mask or plastic face shield that covers the nose and mouth. Those who do not would be fined $50 for the first offense, $75 for the second offense and $300 for any subsequent offenses. The borough would also have the right to issue a written warning prior to the first offense. The ordinance would start September 1st, and would end either on January 1st of 2021, or when PA Secretary of Health Dr. Rachael Levine rescinds the mask order in Pennsylvania, whichever comes first.
As of this morning, more than 700 comments have been logged on our Facebook pages concerning the issue since the story broke on Saturday.
Borough Council President Peter Broad and Vice President Gerald Smith will be on Indiana in the Morning on WCCS to further discuss the ordinance at 9:10 Monday morning. Meanwhile, people against the proposed ordinance are planning for a rally outside of Indiana Borough Offices at 5:30 on Tuesday. Council will meet virtually at 7:00 PM on Tuesday to vote on the ordinance as part of their regular meeting.
