Thursday night, Indiana Borough’s Public Safety Committee met and discussed the proposed ordinance concerning Covid-19 and face masks.
During the meeting, Police Chief Justin Schawl said that the Governor issued a letter asking local police departments to make sure businesses and people are acting in good faith to follow mitigation efforts. The written guidance included when police should step in and encourage guidance and when a situation has escalated to a point to warrant action from local law enforcement. In his statement, Schawl said that making sure that people comply should be done with education and understanding, not to compel with punishments. He also said that an ordinance like the one proposed on Tuesday would offer a more officer friendly way to combat blatant and continued non-compliance.

Borough Council member Donald Lancaster said they met with Downtown Indiana and the Chamber of Commerce, and one thing that everyone could agree on is an increased educational effort. He also said that more information will be coming in before they decide on how the ordinance will look for advertisement.
More discussion will be held next Tuesday at the Administration Commitee Meeting, which will also be held virtually and will start at 7:00 PM. Borough council anticipates having an ordinance ready to approve for their agenda prep session on September 8th.
