State police have issued a scam alert after an Indiana County resident reported that they’d been contacted by someone claiming to be an agent of the Social Security Administration, who told them that their Social Security number had been compromised.
Police say the intended victim answered the call because their caller ID displayed a local number. The caller recited the resident’s name, age, address, and the last four digits of their Social Security number, and then asked for confirmation of that information so they could transfer the call to the United States Marshal’s Service. The caller also tried to get the person’s personal banking and investment history.
The resident recognized it as a scam and hung up without providing any information, and did not lose any money.
Police say that if you have any doubt about the legitimacy of any suspicious phone call, hang up and contact a trusted family member, friend, or law enforcement agency.
