A Clearfield County man was killed yesterday when his pickup truck was struck by an out-of-control tri-axle truck on Route 56 in East Wheatfield Township and collided head-on with his pickup truck. The crash happened at 2:48 PM near Shellbark Road, just west of United High School.
Indiana County Coroner Jerry Overman Jr. identifies the victim as 58-year-old Joel Bundy of DuBois, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Overman says Bundy was not wearing his seat belt and the cause of death is pending the results of an autopsy, which will be conducted today.
State police say three passengers in Bundy’s vehicle were taken to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, as was the other driver, 55-year-old Darren Rapp of Altoona. All were treated for minor injuries.
Police say Rapp’s truck slid on snow and ice and crossed over the center line. Armagh, Clyde, and Brush Valley firefighters responded to the scene and Route 56 was closed in the aftermath of the accident.
State police in Ebensburg have not yet published a report on another bad accident that happened last night, this one on Route 422 between Ebensburg and Belsano. That crash reportedly involved a tractor trailer and closed the highway until around midnight.
