A longtime Indiana County politician and a fixture on the fair and festival circuit for many years passed away earlier this week.
Paul Wass passed away on Sunday at the Fountains of Indiana. He was born in Iselin in 1925 and after graduating from Elders Ridge Vocational High School, he started working at the Indiana County Home as a farm hand. He would later enter public service holding several row offices in the county, including Auditor, county treasurer and county commissioner. In 1977, Wass was elected as a member of the State House of Representatives, serving until 1990.
Former State Senator Don White called Wass a mentor when he was starting his career.
Sara Steelman would replace Wass in the State House and she said that he was dedicated to Indiana County.
After his years of public service, Wass and his wife Ilean would own and operate J & J Funnel Cakes, a popular food stand at many different festivals and the Indiana County Fair. Three years ago, the Wass’ would sell the business to Wayne McAfoos.
Wass passed away at the age of 95.
