Steelers General Manager Kevin Colbert said yesterday that Ben Roethlisberger is still the team’s starting quarterback for now, but “a lot of work needs to be done” over the negotiating table for Big Ben to stay on the job. He counts for $41 million against the salary cap, the largest amount in the NFL, and Colbert and team owner Art Rooney II both say that will have to change. Colbert said the two sides have not started negotiations yet.
Colbert has a busy offseason planned as he tries to wrangle his way out of an enormous salary cap puzzle. He says the team wants to re-sign Bud Dupree but hasn’t figured out how yet, and there are numerous other players who could be lost to free agency, including James Conner and JuJu Smith-Schuster.
