Many school districts in Indiana County have signed resolutions urging Pennsylvania government to enact some reforms concerning charter schools doing business in the state. That reform could happen in a plan that was unveiled by Governor Tom Wolf.
According to the Wolf Administration, the plan would hold Charter Schools more accountable for providing students with a good education. Governor Wolf said that charter schools graduate only two-thirds of their students, and when funding is re-directed towards those schools, it means less money for traditional schools, which can harm students and communities by cutting programs and raising taxes.
Governor Wolf said that his plan would save taxpayers about $229 million a year. Another part of his plan is to increase the transparency of charter schools that are run by for-profit companies.
However, not everyone is happy with the Governor’s plan. Senate President Pro Tempore Jake Corman said that the plan shows how out of touch the Governor is on the issue. He says that the plan will limit school choices for families as many districts still remain closed from the Coronavirus pandemic. He said the plan was “discriminatory” and targeted students with special needs.
