At its quarterly business meeting on Monday, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission gave preliminary approval to a proposal that would establish a single, statewide Opening Day of Trout Season beginning annually next year.
Regional opening days were established in 2007, however PFBC Executive Director Tim Schaeffer said in a news release that the idea for a statewide opening day came “out of necessity because of public safety concerns,” after he said more anglers enjoyed trout fishing last year than the Commission saw in decades.
Under the proposal, the regular trout season would begin on the first Saturday in April each year, but to make that possible, there would have to be several changes made to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Code (Title 58). Some changes include earlier stocking operations and a statewide Mentored Youth Trout Fishing Day scheduled for the Saturday before the first official day of Trout season.
The changes will be voted on in a future meeting and, if approved, will go into effect Jan. 1, 2022.
The Commission also discussed fishing license fees, law enforcement and fisheries designations. You can read more information about these discussions within the news release. A link to that can be found here.
