Before the remnants of Hurricane Ida come to Indiana County, the Indiana Fire Association and State Police are offering some tips to help prevent flooding at home and trouble on the road.
Homeowners are advised to clean and inspect the gutters, and extend downspouts away from the house, and don’t allow the downspouts to flow into French drains. Make sure interior drains are clear of debris and household items, and if you have a sump pump and or a generator, make sure both are in working order.
State police are also offering up tips for driving if you have to go out during the storm. They say that drivers should slow down and watch for roadway debris like fallen trees and limbs, downed utility lines and beware of standing water and ponding on roads. If you see a road that’s flooded, the best thing to do is to “turn around, don’t drown.” If you do have to go out, consider a route that is not prone to flooding.
Troopers also advise that you check the battery, tire tread depth, lights and fluid levels and keep the gas tank half-full. They also advise that you have an emergency kit in the car, and they also say don’t rely on automatic headlights, but turn the headlights on manually if you are travelling. State law requires the headlights go on when the windshield wipers go on.
