FirstEnergy Corporation, the parent company of Penelec and three other electric companies in Pennsylvania, says it has disabled all of its online accounts, and is requiring all of its customers to reset their passwords before they can log on.
The company made the move on Friday after detecting numerous unauthorized attempts by hackers to log into customer accounts. While the vast majority of those attempts were unsuccessful, a number of logins were completed.
FirstEnergy says customers will not be able to access their account until their passwords are updated. Customers must enter their username and email address that they’ve previously associated with their online profile, and they will then be sent a link to reset their password.
For assistance in the password update process, you can visit the “contact us” section at firstenergycorp.com.
In addition the Penelec and the three other Pennsylvania subsidiaries, FirstEnergy operates electric utilities serving portions of Ohio, New Jersey, West Virginia, and Maryland.
