Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate went down for the sixth consecutive month.
The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry announced yesterday that the unemployment rate across the state went down one-tenth of a percentage point in August to 6.4 percent. July’s rate was also revised to a lower unemployment rate to 6.5 percent. The state’s unemployment rate was 3.8 percentage points down from last year at this time.
The state civilian work force went down by 7000 over the month in large part due to a drop of 6000 in unemployment which fell for the sixth consecutive month. The total number of non-farm jobs went up 5,100 over the month to 5,743,000 in August. Jobs increased in eight of the 11 industry super-sectors. The largest movement was a drop in 8800 in the leisure and hospitality fields, while the largest gain was tied between business and professional and other services, which were each up 3200. Over the last year, jobs were up 191,100.
The national unemployment rate fell two-tenths of a percentage point in July to 5.2 percent. Over the year, the national rate was down 3.2 percentage points.
