In a closed session yesterday, Pennsylvania’s Republican State Committee declined to endorse candidates for Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and U.S. Senate.
Some of the candidates themselves were surprised that the meeting was secret, a week after the Democrats kept their state committee meeting open, endorsing Josh Shapiro for Governor and Austin Davis for Lieutenant Governor, while declining to endorse a candidate for Senate. On emerging from the meeting, several who were in the room reported that the decision to forego an endorsement for any of the races was done by voice vote.
The last time the Republican party failed to endorse a candidate was in 1978, when Dick Thornburgh eventually won the election.
