On Thursday night, the River Valley School Board officially rejected an application to put a charter school in Saltsburg.
In a document that was part of the proposed agenda for the meeting, the board listed several reasons for rejecting the application, including failure to provide a physical address for the school, failure to provide how an education at the proposed charter school would be different from an education in the district, and that the group failed to explain how they will provide custodial services and school meal programs, along with a realistic timeline to open the school.
During the public comment portion of the meeting, Paul Schwartz spoke on behalf of the charter school to address those comments, but he asked why these concerns were not brought up during the public hearing in December.
The board voted 5-3 to reject the application outright, with Melanie Pantalone abstaining as she is currently making an inquiry if her voting for or against any issue with the charter school would present a conflict of interest as her mother and husband were asked to be voting members of the academy.
The group behind the proposed charter school can either appeal the decision of the board or submit a revised application for the charter school.
