In light of the Russian invasion of Ukraine and crude oil prices jumping to over $100 a barrel, Senator Joe Pittman and two others are urging President Joe Biden to re-start the Keystone XL Pipeline.
Pittman, along with fellow republican state senators Wayne Langerholic, Jr. and Gene Yaw said that they intend to introduce a resolution to ask the president to reopen the pipeline that was abandoned in 2021 by the corporate backer, TC Energy of Canada. That came after President Biden denied a key permit for the project on his first day in office in 2020. Many had seen the project as a threat to the climate, ecosystems, drinking water sources and public health, and it had been a source of controversy for several years.
In a joint statement, Senator Pittman said that the United States should “pursue an all-out energy production effort to not only give our country independence from Russian-generated energy or any other energy produced by those who don’t share America’s interests.” He also said it would provide America’s allies with energy that does not come at the cost of the freedom of other sovereign nations.
Langerholic added that the pipeline is one part of the solution to head towards energy independence.
The United States imports over 800,000 barrels of oil a day from Russia, but the invasion of Ukraine by Russian Forces has jeopardized that supply.
