The Penguins were outgunned by the Edmonton Oilers last night, losing to a team they had not lost to on home ice since 2006.
Paul Steigerwald has the recap.
Penguins coach Mike Sullivan says his team is not in a good frame of mind, with two straight losses and three in their last five games.
Sullivan says the Penguins are not playing confidently.
Sullivan tried some different line combinations early in the game but when Jason Zucker left the ice with a lower body injury in the first period, he had to scramble to put his lines together.
Sullivan said Jason Zucker’s injury was still being evaluated.
The New York Islanders helped the Penguins by thrashing Washington, 4-1, leaving the Penguins still a point ahead of the Capitals for third place in the Metro Division. The Caps’ superstar forward Alex Ovechkin missed the game because of an upper body injury and while the team did not say anything about his availability for the final two games of the regular season, they did express doubts about his availability for the first round of the playoffs. Ovechkin said he feels good, but “We’ll see.”
The Penguins close the regular season at home against Columbus. The Capitals play the Islanders again on Thursday and close against the Rangers on Friday.
