Today is the first of two days where IUP students will celebrate their graduation.
Students graduating this month and after the summer semester in August will be able to take part in the ceremonies tonight and tomorrow at the KCAC. Tonight’s ceremonies at 7:00 PM will focus on those graduating with a master’s or doctoral degree, and two ceremonies will be held tomorrow for undergraduate students. The 9:00 AM ceremonies will celebrate graduates for the Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Health and Human Services, and ceremonies at 2:00 PM will be for students in the College of Education and Communications, the College of Arts and Humanities, the Eberly College of Business and the University College. A total of 1,772 graduates will take part in the three ceremonies. The Distinguished University Professor recipient Dr. Alida Merlo will present the commencement address at both the graduate and undergraduate ceremonies.
Among those graduating today are two Indiana County families who are celebrating a parent and a child graduating together. Ron Burkhardt and his son Jared along with Sharon Herring and her daughter Jane will receive their degrees this weekend. All four will receive their bachelor’s degree on Saturday during the 2:00 PM ceremony. Ron majored in Hotel, Restaurant, Tourism and Event management while Jared will receive his Bachelor’s degree in English. Sharon will graduate with a general studies degree with a focus in Geography along with a double-minor in history and women and gender studies, while Jane will receive her degree in music.
Traffic is expected to increase around the KCAC at time of the graduation ceremonies tonight and tomorrow. Shuttle routes will be set up for both days. More information can be found at www.iup.edu/commencement
