Some untimely penalties and a goaltending gaffe allowed the New York Rangers to secure a 5-3 win over the Penguins last night and force a game seven tomorrow night at Madison Square Garden.
After the Pens built up a 2-0 lead in the first period, the Rangers rattled off three straight in the second. The first two came from Mika Zibanejad. The first was a power play goal as Evan Rodrigues was caught retaliating from a cross-check by Rangers defenseman Ryan Lingren. The second of Zibanejad’s goals came less than two minutes later. Kris Kreider gave the Rangers a 3-2 lead later on, but Evgeni Malkin tied it up at three each to end the second period.
In the third period, Kreider scored on a rebound late for the game winning goal, with Andrew Copp scoring an insurance goal with less than a minute to go.
Pens Head Coach Mike Sullivan said that the momentum just switched back and forth during the game, but he was not happy with the performance of the Pens special teams.
Brian Boyle left the game early on with an undisclosed lower-body injury that he is still being evaluated, and Sullivan said that while he will be missed on the special teams, there trying to keep going with the “next man up” mentality.
It’s now win or the season’s over for both teams as game seven will be played Sunday night with face off just after 7. You can hear the game starting at 6 on U-92.5 FM and the U-92.5 Sports Channel.
