Steelers defensive lineman Stephon Tuitt unexpectedly announced today that he is retiring from the NFL.
Tuitt said in an official statement on the team’s social media platforms that “after the tragic loss of my brother Richard, and upon completing my degree from the University of Notre Dame, I know I am being called to move beyond the sport of football.”
He thanked fans in the statement for the love and support they’ve shown over his career, and he also thanked team president Art Rooney II, Coach Mike Tomlin and the entire Steelers organization, calling his time in Pittsburgh “an honor and privilege.”
Tuitt was the Steelers’ second-round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and accrued 246 tackles, 34.5 sacks and two interceptions over his seven-year career. He missed the 2021 season due to his brother’s passing and a knee injury.
