For the third time in franchise history the Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cup champions.
The Avs finished off the two-time defending Cup champs in Game Six of the Final with a 2-1 win in Tampa. The Lightning struck first after Steven Stamkos scored in the opening period. Colorado bounced back with a pair of goals in the middle frame. Nathan MacKinnon scored his 13th of the postseason and Artturi Lehkonen’s eighth of the playoffs proved to be the game-winner.
Cale Makar was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Most Valuable Player of the postseason.
McKinnon said it was great to win the championship.
Avs’ head coach Jared Bednar says the organization deserves credit for the championship win.
COLLEGE WORLD SERIES
The Rebels are celebrating a historic championship.
With a 4-2 victory, Ole Miss swept the Oklahoma Sooners to win its first ever College World Series. The Rebels scored three times in the bottom of the eighth to take the lead heading into the final frame. Brandon Johnson struck out the side to close out the game. John Gaddis was credited with the win after pitching an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco said winning it all was special.
The Rebels finish the Cinderella story after being one of the final four team selected to the NCAA Tournament.
PGA
Xander Schauffele is celebrating another tournament win. Schauffele finished atop the leaderboard at 19 under par to win the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands. The 28-year-old shot a 68 on the final day of the tournament. This is Schauffele’s second win of the season after taking the Zurich Classic of New Orleans earlier in the year. JT Poston and Sahith Theegala tied for second after finishing the tournament 17 under par.
WIMBLEDON
The top tennis players in the world are meeting on the grass courts at Wimbledon. On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic looks to defend his title and seeks his fourth straight win at the tournament.
He’ll face some tough competition as second-seeded Rafael Nadal comes off an impressive win at the French Open.
On the women’s side, there will be a new champion as newly retired Ashleigh Barty won’t be defending her title. World Number-1 Iga Swiatek looks to continue her dominance after winning at Roland Garros and looks for her first title at Wimbledon.
NASCAR
Chase Elliot is the winner of the Ally 400 race at Nashville Superspeedway. Several weather delays moved the second half of the race to last night. Elliot claimed his second win of the season with his previous victory coming at Dover Motor Speedway last month. Kurt Busch, Ryan Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Ross Chastain round out the top five finishers. The next race is Sunday at Road America in Wisconsin.
