The victim in the fatal crash of a coal truck on Tuesday has been identified.
Reports say that the victim was 57-year-old Thomas Mears of Marion Center. After the crash, he was originally taken to Indiana Regional Medical Center before being airlifted to Allegheny General Hospital where he later died from his injuries.
State Police say the crash happened shortly after 4:30 AM when the truck, travelling south on Route 119, went off the elevated highway and travelled onto the grassy median, striking a guardrail and then an embankment. It then went airborne and went through the divided overpass, striking a concrete barrier below on the Wayne Avenue ramp. Mears was not wearing a seatbelt at the time and was thrown from the vehicle.
The on-ramps to Wayne Avenue and 119 North were closed for several hours yesterday while the State Police Troop A Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Specialist Unit, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Unit and Forensic Services Unit conducted their investigation.
