The Republican caucus of the PA Senate elected its leadership and State Senator Joe Pittman was elected to a leadership position for the next legislative session for 2022-2023.
Pittman was elected to serve as the Senate Majority Leader, meaning that he will oversee the legislative agenda, developing policies and strategies for the caucus, and will play a key role in floor debates. He will also have a major role in negotiating issues with the Administration and House of Representatives and in coordinating action on the Senate floor.
In a statement, Pittman said that he was honored to be named to the position, and says he looks forward to working with members from both sides of the aisle to advocate for all Pennsylvanians. He also said that while he has this new position, he will continue to focus on the people of the 41st Senatorial District.
History was aslo made during these elections, as for the first time, a woman was elected to a leadership position in the Senate itself. State Senator Kim Ward, who represents the central portions of Westmoreland County, was named the interim President Pro Tempore of the state senate. She will be responsible for appointing the chairpersons and members of the 22 standing committees of the Senate and will serve as an ex-officio member of all committees and preside over the Senate Floor when the Lt. Governor is not available. She will serve as the pro tempore of the senate from December 1st to January 2nd. On the 3rd, the Senate will vote for a new President Pro Tempore.
