At the NCAA College Basketball Tournament, the Pitt Panthers will dance into the next round thanks to a 59-41 upset victory over the #6 Iowa State Cyclones.
The game was a defensive battle all the way. Pitt’s defense limited the Cyclones to the fewest points scored against the Panthers in the NCAA tournament. Iowa State’s struggles showed as they were 14 of 60 shooting and missed 23 of their first 25 shots in the second half. Nelly Cummings lead the Panthers with 13 points followed by Jamarius Burton with 11 and Greg Elliott with 10. Next game for the Panthers is Sunday at 12:10 PM against #3 Xavier, who won over Kennesaw State 72-67
Friday’s first round action was punctuated with only the second 16-1 upset in tournament history as the underdog Fairleigh Dickenson beat Purdue 63-58. It was five years ago that UMBC beat Virginia for the first such upset in the tournament.
Other winners yesterday included Michigan State, Baylor, St. Mary’s, Marquette, Creighton, UConn, Kentucky, Gonzaga, University of Miami, Florida Atlantic, Kansas State, TCU and Indiana. Among the games today, Penn State takes on Texas.
