Those headed to Yellow Creek State Park will be able to protect themselves from the sun with free sunscreen provided through a state program.
Yellow Creek was included in an expansion of the program from the Shapiro administration. According to an announcement from the State Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, battery-operated dispensers supplying SPF 30+ BrightGuard sunscreen applications will be put in place in the park. The sunscreen program was started in 2017 when the bureau of state parks began supplying free sunscreen at Pine Grove Furnace and Codorus state parks. Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said that as the weather turns warmer and sunnier, people need to protect themselves from potentially harmful UV rays when spending extended time outdoors. The state park program is supported by the PA Department of Health and Impact Melanoma.
Yellow Creek and 45 other state parks will receive the pole-mounted dispensers.
Experts say daily application of a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or higher can aid in prevention of skin cancer. Health officials report one in 40 Pennsylvanians will be diagnosed with melanoma in their lifetime.
