Members of the Indiana community came together for a vigil on the steps of the Indiana County Courthouse Sunday night.
The crowd gathered heard from elected leaders representing the county and local governments and IUP, as all were affected by the news of the killing of one person and wounding of eight others in the shooting reported early this morning at the Chevy Chase Community Center.
Indiana County Commissioner and I-ACT Co-chair Robin Gorman said that she was happy to see the support the community was showing, but she encouraged those in attendance to continue that support.
White Township Supervisors Chairperson Gail McCauley said that this incident, or any violent incidents, will not define the community.
After the vigil, IUP President Dr. Michael Driscoll said that they have been in constant communication with the university community, and are offering assistance to those who need it.
Among those in attendance was IUP student Christine Berry, who recalled the moments she was first informed of the shooting.
Berry said she was happy with how law enforcement officials handled the situation and that she feels safe on campus.
Evan Shoenfelt, resident of Indiana and a member of IUP’s campus ministry, said it was good to see community members support each other at the courthouse.
Shoenfelt said he hopes residents keep a positive mindset during this time.
While the shooting has been termed an isolated incident, and there is no further threat to the community, IUP has announced that there will be an increased security presence around campus tomorrow as classes will be held as scheduled.
