Major League teams have until six o’clock tonight to set the 40-man rosters for the winter, ahead of the December 6th Rule 5 Draft. The Pirates have 37 players currently on the roster, so they could conceivably keep the three open spots for Rule 5 draftees, but it’s rare that a team drafts more than one.
The team must also decide by today which of their Rule 5-eligible players they want to protect from the draft, with a number of highly-rated players at risk, such as pitcher Braxton Ashcraft, infielder Tsung-Che Cheng, first baseman Malcom Nunez, and outfielders Jase Bowen and Matt Gorski.
Major League Baseball’s Awards Week began last night with the naming of the Rookies of the Year. Diamondbacks outfielder Corbin Carroll and Orioles shortstop Gunnar Henderson each won the award unanimously. It was only the fifth time in league history that both rookies were voted as unanimous winners. Carroll hit .285 last season with 25 homers and 54 stolen bases for Arizona. Henderson batted .255 with 28 home runs and 82 RBI for Baltimore.
The Manager of the Year for each league will be announced tonight.
