The state Public Utility Commission recently released its audit report on Pennsylvania American Water Company, highlighting 31 improvements the utility could make to its operations. Key findings include the need to reduce unaccounted-for-water, reducing line hits for underground facilities, and, importantly, “improving physical security for control rooms and…control systems.”
Security has become a major issue for utilities, especially water systems. Last month, international hackers attacked the Municipal Authority of Aliquippa. Federal authorities said the perpetrators were from Iran, and they claimed the legal right to attack the water system because some of their equipment was made in Israel.
Other recommendations for Pennsylvania American in the PUC audit included improving customer service performance to pre-pandemic levels and continued outreach to “payment troubled customers.”
In its response to the audit, Pennsylvania American accepted, or accepted in part, all of the 31 recommendations, and outlined measures the company will take to address them.
