IUP has announced that they will receive $150,000 in federal funding for the school’s proposed college of osteopathic medicine.
The funding was part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act for the 2024 fiscal year that became law last Saturday. The provision was sponsored by Congressman Guy Reschenthaler and Senator John Fetterman. IUP started the process to open its own college of osteopathic medicine in December of 2022, and when it opens, it will become the first college of its type at a public college in Pennsylvania. The other three osteopathic medicine schools are at private universities.
In a statement, Congressmen Reschenthaler said that the funding will support critical scientific research and increase health care access for rural communities. Senator Fetterman said that the new school will address the lack of trained physicians to provide care for Pennsylvanians.
Earlier in the year, Senator Joe Pittman announced that the state was providing $2 million for the school. It was also announced that IUP’s Alumni Association would contribute $500,000 to the school.
