In a surprising move Friday afternoon, the Steelers traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Philadelphia Eagles for several draft picks.
Pickett was tabbed to work with new offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and compete with veteran Russell Wilson for the team’s starting job, but Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports Pickett poorly handled Wilson’s arrival in Pittsburgh, ultimately leading to the trade. He adds it also came on the heels of his refusal to dress as the team’s emergency quarterback against Seattle in Week 17.
In two seasons with the Steelers, Pickett posted a 62.6 completion percentage with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
Along with Pickett, the Eagles will get the 120th pick in this year’s NFL Draft. The Steelers will receive the 98th pick in this year’s draft and two seventh-round picks next year.
Coincidentally, the Steelers also officially announced Wilson’s signing this afternoon, along with linebacker Patrick Queen and safety DeShon Elliot.
