Several IUP students, faculty and staff were recently honored for their contributions to the research field during the 30th annual Research Awards Reception at IUP.
In a statement, the university’s Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research Hillary Creely said that the event is a great chance for scholars to be recognized for their efforts and it also gives them an opportunity to show off the quality of work and the mentoring that goes on through the school. The event is held traditionally as a part of IUP’s annual Research Appreciation Week.
The sponsored program award recipients include:
- Outstanding Achievement in Research: Dr. Howard “Skip” Kingston, Madia Department of Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Engineering
- Outstanding Achievement in Curriculum and Instruction: Dr. Waleed Farag, professor of Computer Science and director of the Institute for Cyber Security) and Dr. Shijuan “Laurel” Liu, professor of modern languages (Chinese).
- Outstanding Achievement in Public Service: Dr. Richard Muth, director, Northpointe and Punxsutawney campuses and Pittsburgh East
- New Investigator Award: Dr. Kristy Chunta, professor of nursing and allied health.
- Graduate Dean’s Award for Outstanding Commitment to Sponsored Programs: Dr. David Janetski, professor of biology
- Service in Support of IUP’s Research Mission: Pauline Wells, administrative assistant in the Division of Administration and Finance.

- Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Award: Dr. Jonathan Lewis, professor of geology.
- Institutional Transformation Award: Vice Provost for Student Academic Success Dr. Amber Racchini and Strategic Advisor to the President for Student Success Paula Stossel
The deans of IUP’s colleges presented these Deans’ Awards:
- Dean’s Outstanding Researcher, College of Arts and Humanities: Dr. Henry Wong Doe, associate professor of piano.
- Dean’s Outstanding Researcher, College of Health and Human Services: Dr. Timothy Runge, professor in the Department of Psychology.
- Dean’s Outstanding Researcher, Eberly College of Business: Dr. Brandon Vick, associate professor of economics and research associate with the Administration and Leadership Studies Research and Training Center.
- Dean’s Outstanding Researcher, College of Education and Communications: Dr. Matthew Nice, assistant professor, Department of Counseling.
- Dean’s Outstanding Researcher, Kopchick College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics: Dr. Andrada Maicaneanu, chemistry.
The following students were honored with Outstanding Graduate Student Awards:
- Ahlam Abulaila, a student in the English Literature & Criticism doctoral program.
- Sayed Ali Reza Ahmadi, a student in the English Composition and Applied Linguistics doctoral program.
- Court Harding, biology master’s program.
- Luke Nicosia, Applied Archaeology master’s program.
