Reaction is coming in concerning a recent announcement from the PIAA concerning girls flag football.
In an announcement earlier this week, PIAA officials said their board of directors approved the first reading of a policy that would make Girls’ Flag Football a recognized sport in the state by a unanimous vote. The sport was first recognized by the administration as an emerging sport in July of 2023. Nine other states have sanctioned Girls’ Flag Football, and the sport is set to become an Olympic sport in 2028.
Kaycee Newell of the Indiana Womens’ Flag Football organization said she was excited by the news, and that she has been keeping track of the sport’s progress
She said that while they don’t have a lot of high school students in their ranks, she anticipates that the IWFF will be a place where players can develop the skills needed for the high school ranks.
The sport will go before the PIAA Board of Directors again for second consideration at its next meeting.
