State Police report an increase in activity over the four-day memorial day holiday driving period.
From May 24th to the 27th, troopers across the state investigated 756 total crashes, up from 651 the year before. Five of the crashes this year were fatal, six people were killed and 181 people were hurt. Last year, there were three fatal crashes, four people were killed and 142 were injured. One of the fatal crashes this year was DUI-Related. There were 46 DUI-related crashes, which was down from 59 the year before.
Police made 467 DUI-related arrests this year, issued 8,834 speeding tickets, 1,234 seat belt citations and 172 child safety seat citations.
In Troop A, which covers most of Indiana and Westmoreland Counties and all of Cambria and Somerset counties, one fatal crash was reported, and that was the motorcycle crash reported in Derry Township on Saturday morning. That crash was one of 33 investigated by troopers in the region, and 12 people were injured. Six of the crashes were DUI-related. Troopers also arrested 33 people on DUI charges, issued 302 speeding tickets, 52 seat belt citations and two child safety seat violations.
The stats reflect only incidents investigated by State Police and do not represent incidents investigated by local police.
