At their meeting Monday night, the Indiana school board approved joining a partnership with IUP and Westmoreland County Community College to help students earn an Associates Degree while earning their high school diploma.
Through a combination of what the district calls “college in high school” classes, students can earn up to 61 credits and an Associates of Arts degree in general studies for only $6,000. Along with that, students would be able to graduate from high school and IUP at the same time. The classes would be a combination of ones taught by Indiana Area School District staff members that are approved by WCCC to teach college coursework, and “dual enrollment” courses that are offered by IUP either in-person or online.
Superintendent Robert Heinrich called the agreement a “win-win” for students and he said he hopes it opens up more opportunities down the road.
The program will start in the fall.
In other business, the board approved hiring Rob Peace as the new assistant Buildings & Grounds supervisor, as well as six science teachers. Heinrich also commended several individuals for their contributions towards the district’s graduation ceremony Friday evening at the KCAC, and Coach Dan Petroff and the boys’ baseball team for their historic season, which featured a state semifinal win Monday night in Bellefonte.
