Horace Mann Elementary School will close effective the end of the 2024-25 school year.
The vote to close the school came at Monday night’s school board meeting and was a 9-0 unanimous vote. According to the resolution, the district will be able to educate all fourth and fifth grade students at the newly-renovated Eisenhower school and receive the same education. Another reason was that the building is 116 years old and would need extensive repairs or renovations.
Before that vote, the board approved leasing some of the empty rooms in the building to Merakey, a company that specializes in special needs services for school-age and adult students. Superintendent Robert Heinrich said that their presence will be greatly appreciated as few spaces are available.
He added that this fills one of the things that the public requested for Horace Mann which is to keep using it for educational purposes.
The lease with Merakey comes to $33,000 a year.
