The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is warning people of a scam involving text messages being sent to random individuals that are trying to scam them out of money from false unpaid toll claims.
The texts look like they come from “Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Services” and make an urgent request to pay off a toll that is overdue or additional charges will be levied. This is similar to “smishing” scams that were reported by other toll agencies across the country over the past few days.
People who receive an unsolicited email, text or similar message saying its from the PA Turnpike or another toll agency should not click on the link. E-Z Pass and Toll-By-Plate customers can easily check their balances on the official PA Turnpike E-Z Pass Website, or the PA Toll Pay app. They are also encouraged to file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
