The Steelers’ Russell Wilson practiced for the first time yesterday at training camp in Latrobe, but the team lost one of his targets, third round draft choice Roman Wilson, who rolled an ankle and was carted off the field. ESPN reported later that he is termed “week to week” according to a team source, but the Steelers did not issue an official release.
Russell Wilson, who injured a calf muscle during the conditioning test prior to the first day of practice, played in the 7-on-7 drills, hitting a highlight reel bomb to tight end Connor Heyward.
In the feature drill of the day, the vaunted “backs on backers”, the running backs did well against the Steelers rushers. Coach Mike Tomlin said there will be plenty of chances for the defense to step it up.
Tomlin said staying healthy and making your case on the field could be the difference between making the team or not.
The coach says he is impressed by the work of his offensive line, both the veterans and the three highly-touted rookies.
Russell Wilson says he likes being at Latrobe and is enjoying himself.
Wilson says the Steelers are working hard at St. Vincent.
The Steelers yesterday signed free agent tight end Matt Sokol, who’s been with five NFL teams and has played in games for the Chargers and Patriots. They also signed cornerback Kyler McMichael, who’s spent time in the Buccaneers, Bills, and Cardinals organizations. Defensive back Josiah Scott and wide receiver Marquez Callaway were released.
