Governor Josh Shapiro is joining others in declaring today as National Blood Donation Day.
This year’s declaration comes as the American Red Cross continues to navigate a drastic blood supply shortage. The number of donations has dipped due to summer travel plans and the cancellation of many blood drives across the nation due to Hurricane Debby and other severe weather events. The Red Cross is offering a free t-shirt as an incentive for donating blood, platelets or plasma between now and September 15th.
The next local blood drives are scheduled for Friday at the American Legion Post 493 in Homer city from 11:30 AM to 5:00 PM and at IUP’s HUB next Tuesday from 9 AM to 2 PM. To schedule an appointment for these events or to find other blood drives in the area, log on to www.redcrossblood.org.
