The Northern Appalachian Folk Festival officially kicks off tomorrow, but things will be busy tonight at the NAFF Center in the 500 block of Philadelphia Street.
The organization is offering a screening of the film “From Billions to None: The Passenger Pigeon’s Flight to Extinction” at 7:00 Tonight. The film talks about how the bird went into extinction, and plans for its possible revival. A discussion with Fulbright Scholar and former Indiana Borough Councilman Gerald Smith will follow.
Activity on Friday starts at 4:30 at the American Legion stage. This year’s festival has expanded to include two music stages, with one outside the American Legion Headquarters on Philadelphia Street and the other stage on 7th Street. Acts include the Kiara Smith Band, Rivers, Black Ridge and HABATAT on Friday. Concerts on both stages will start at noon on Saturday. The Walk of Fame ceremony will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, and there will also be the traditional fiddle, mandolin, guitar and banjo contest at 11 AM and the Storytellers and Liars contest at 3:00 at the Indiana Theater. There will also be a children’s alley with activities offered through the day on Saturday. Everything wraps up Saturday at the American Legion Stage with a show by The Commonheart that starts at 8:40.
