Hundreds gathered in IUP’s Oak Grove Wednesday morning to honor the lives lost in the 9/11 terror attacks.
More than 3,000 lives were lost 23 years ago in New York, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, including three IUP alumni who were killed in the attack on the World Trade Center: Donald Jones, William Moskal and William Sugra.
James Leda, a 1995 graduate and board president for the Foundation for IUP, was the keynote speaker as he worked about a block away from the World Trade Center when the attacks happened. He said he didn’t have the opportunity to meet Jones, Moskal and Sugra, but they taught us to make the most of every day, as life is short.
President Dr. Michael Driscoll talked about the significance about the relic which was dedicated to IUP from the Kovalchick Corporation in 2002. He said it serves as a reminder of the country’s strength and unity following the attack.
James King performed Amazing Grace on the bagpipes while cadets with IUP’s ROTC program placed wreaths in front of the 9/11 memorial honoring Jones, Moskall and Sugra.
